Reconstruction
A pre-existing brick fort, originally held by the Rajput Sikarwars, was comprehensively rebuilt using red sandstone by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. It took eight years to complete the primary massive concentric walls, utilizing thousands of builders daily.
Internal Structures
Contains multiple distinct buildings erected by successive emperors. Successions range from Akbar's rugged red sandstone Jahangiri Mahal to Shah Jahan's refined white marble Diwan-i-Khas and the intricate Pearl Mosque (Moti Masjid).
Strategic Function
Operated concurrently as a military base, a royal residence, and the official seat of government. It housed the imperial treasury and mint, effectively functioning as a heavily fortified self-contained city protecting the Mughal administration until the capital shifted.
